My Little Arcana

I’m a witchy-queerdo from a small town in Ontario.

Growing up in the 80s, all I had to “free my mind” were my aunts’ record collections, Fashion Television, the occasional free MuchMusic weekend, and the occult section of the local library.

Looking back, I can pinpoint iconic moments that had profound influence on me. These became My Little Arcana.

The Creep

Size: 59 x 57 inches / 150 x 145 centimeters

Year: 2019

Medium: Reclaimed t-shirt yarn woven onto hemp cord and backed with cotton.

He represents a type of very cringe-worthy guy who lurked around 90s rock shows bugging my friends and I. He turned us to the Riot Grrrl movement.

Pierrot

Size: 61 x 63 inches / 155 x 160 centimeters

Year: 2022

Medium: Reclaimed t-shirt yarn woven onto hemp cord and backed with cotton.

Along with my deep pre-teen interest in mime and mask work came my fascination with the Pierrot character. This was a popular image in the 1980s and led me to his history. The notion of the “sad-sack” artist trope. I embraced this at a young age.

The Cat

Size: 43 x 22 inches / 109 x 56 centimeters

Year: 2020

Medium: Reclaimed yarn hand punched onto burlap and backed with cotton.

The Cat is a big part of my life and my art. Cats are my familiars. The musical Cats sparked my love of both theatre, and rock music.

The Witch

Size: 63 x 44 inches / 160 x 112 centimeters

Year: 2020

Medium: Reclaimed t-shirt yarn woven onto hemp cord and backed with cotton.

She’s a culmination of all the things that have always fascinated me about witches, both historically and in pop culture. She is my Muse.

The Princess

Size: 40 x 30 inches / 102 x 76 centimeters

Year: 2020

Medium: Reclaimed yarn hand punched onto burlap and backed with cotton.

This take-charge type is no helpless maiden in a tower. She is Princess Leia, a rebel and a smartass with great hair.

The Rock Star

Size: 43 x 29 inches / 109 x 74 centimeters

Year: 2020

Medium: Reclaimed yarn hand punched onto burlap and backed with cotton.

The Rock Star represents artistry, boundary-pushing, and sexuality as embodied by Bowie, glam, and punk.
